Mom Don’t Embarrass Me

By: Rhonda Gales

Do you have a teenager that refuses to be seen with you in public? I remember my daughter’s teenage years, and having to walk behind her at the mall or her requesting me to drop her off a block before her destination. Don’ take it personal. I look back on those years now and laugh, but it was painful when I was experiencing it. My precious jewel didn’t want to be seen with me.

I realized that daughter was trying to find herself, and in the process of discovering who she was she had to loose me. At least while she was in public. She was afraid that I would say the wrong thing, have on the wrong outfit, or my car would be considered outdated and she would never fit into the right group. It’s temporary; you will win the Greatest Mom award again.

Here are a few tips to help you cope while you’re in the Don’t Embarrass Me Mom stage:

·Be patient. Your child still needs you, and it’s imperative that you communicate and stay involved as much as possible.
·Don’t allow your child to become rude and disrespectful toward you. You’re still the parent, and your teen must remember manners and respect no matter what they are trying to accomplish or what they’re going through.
·Give your teen some space, but keep a check on new friends, activities, phone calls etc.
·Require your child to report their whereabouts. Purchasing a cell phone is probably a good idea at this stage.
·Keep a sense of humor about the situation. Again, it’s temporary.
